Inside Shooting Rules
For the big people!
Take a friend to the gym with you to call out each of the 13 drill sections as you do the drill. Otherwise, with 13 drill sections, it is very easy to repeat or omit a section while doing the drill at game speed.
Consider shooting with your left hand when going left and your right hand when going right!

Watch the videos and read the rules below. The demonstrator was not skilled enough to complete the final three types of shots. If you are skilled enought, and wish to be the demonstrator for the entire drill, contact us. The rules govern the competition.
The drill begins when you enter the court from out of bounds beyond the baseline.
The drill ends when you have successfully made 110 baskets as specified below.
Bonus points for scoring consistently with both hands.
On each type of shot you must move between the starting positions. You must not make two consecutive baskets from the same starting position.
To "pass the basketball to yourself" means you hold the ball simultaneously with both hands, release the ball so that you are no longer touching it, then catch it so that both hands touch it simultaneously.
For each of the first ten types of shots you must make one basket after starting with your back to the basket from each of five specified starting positions. Consequently, you must make five baskets on each of the first ten types of shots.
1. Right Foot Drop Step - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Drop step with right foot then score. Maximum of one dribble allowed, but not required. Score one basket from each starting position. Example video:
2. Left Foot Drop Step - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Drop step with left foot then score. Maximum of one dribble allowed, but not required. Score one basket from each starting position. Example video:
3. Left foot forward to face basket and shoot - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Right foot stays on floor and pivots, left foot moves forward till you face basket for shot. No dribble allowed. (Pretend the demonstrator makes the second shot from the free throw line : ) ) Example video:
4. Left foot forward to face basket, touch floor, cross body, and score - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Right foot stays on floor and pivots, left foot moves forward till you face basket and touches floor then crosses body, then score. Maximum of one dribble allowed, but not required. Example video:
5. Right foot forward to face basket and shoot - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Left foot stays on floor and pivots, right foot moves forward till you face basket for shot. No dribble allowed. (Pretend the demonstrator makes the sixth shot from the free throw line : ) ) Example video:
6. Right foot forward to face basket, touch floor, cross body, and score - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Left foot stays on floor and pivots, right foot moves forward till you face basket and touches floor then crosses body, then score. Maximum of one dribble allowed, but not required. Example video:
7. Left foot backward to face basket and shoot - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Right foot stays on floor and pivots, left foot moves backward till you face basket for shot. No dribble allowed. Example video:
8. Left foot backward to face basket, touch floor, cross body, and score - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Right foot stays on floor and pivots, left foot moves backward till you face basket and touches floor then crosses body, then score. Maximum of one dribble allowed, but not required. Example video:
9. Right foot backward to face basket and shoot - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Left foot stays on floor and pivots, right foot moves backward till you face basket for shot. No dribble allowed. Example video:
10. Right foot backward to face basket, touch floor, cross body, and score - Start with back to basket and pass the ball to yourself. Left foot stays on floor and pivots, right foot moves backward till you face basket and touches floor then crosses body, then score. Maximum of one dribble allowed, but not required. Example video:
11. Lateral Put Back - (Example video below) Start with both your feet clearly on one side of the court and facing the backboard. This means you are not to stand with either foot under the basket. Both of your feet are to be to one side of the court from the basket. Use the hand closest to the basket to bounce the ball above the rim and off of the backboard to the other side of the basket. For example, if you begin on the left side of the basket, use your right hand to bounce the ball off of the backboard and if you begin on the right side of the basket, use your left hand to bounce the ball off of the backboard. Move to the other side of the basket. Get the rebound. Jump up and touch the ball onto the backboard while holding it in both of your hands. If you can't do that, then do it while holding the ball in one hand. If you can't do that, then touch the ball to the net. While in the air, either on that jump or, if necessary, a second one, use your hand farthest from the basket to bank the ball off of the backboard and into the basket. For example, if you are on the right side of the basket, use your right hand to bank the ball off of the backboard and into the basket and if you are on the left side of the basket, use your left hand to bank the ball off of the backboard and into the basket. Recover the ball. Repeat the drill this time beginning with the ball on the side you did not begin with for the previous attempt. If you miss a shot, begin the sequence for that shot again. Repeat until you have made 10 baskets from each side.
Lateral Put Back example video (Because of the limited skill of the demonstrator, the demonstrator does not jump up and touch the ball to the board or net prior to scoring. Also, rather than show 10 baskets from each side, it shows only a few baskets from each side. You should of course include the jumps and make 10 baskets from each side.)
12. Tap Ins (example video below) - Start on one side of the basket. Bounce the ball off of the backboard to the side of the basket. Using the hand farthest from the basket, tap the ball into the basket, either directly or off of the backboard. If you are able, you may, but are not required to, jump and while in the air in a single jump, bounce off of the backboard and tap it in before returning to the floor. Some players will be able to both bounce the ball off of the board and tap it in while airborne on a single jump. Many players, like the demonstrator, will have to toss the ball up to the board while on the floor and prior to jumping up to tap the ball in. You must not be touching the floor when you tap the ball. Recover the ball. Move to the other side of the basket. Repeat the sequence using your other hand to tap the ball into the basket. Repeat until you have made 10 baskets from each side. You must make one basket from one side, then a basket from the other side, then a basket from the first side, then a basket from the second side, and so on until you have made a total of ten baskets from each side and twenty baskets in total.
Tap ins example video (Because of the limited skill of the demonstrator, rather than show 10 baskets from each side, it shows only one basket from each side and the demonstrator tosses the ball to the board while still on the floor. You must alternate sides after each basket while making the twenty baskets.):
13. Alternating hands (example video below) - Start under the basket. Make one basket with one hand followed by making the next basket with your other hand. Continue until you have made 10 baskets with each hand.
Alternating Hands example video (By mistake the demonstrator makes 11 baskets from each side. You should make 10 baskets from each side.):
Only you may touch the basketball during the drill.
You, the basket, and the basketball must stay inside the video's frame at all times. The video may not be edited. The camera must be positioned above court level sufficiently for viewers to see clearly the entire three point line in both the three point shooting and mid-range shooting drills. The camera must be positioned above court level sufficiently for viewers to see clearly the entire key in the inside shooting drill. Look through the viewer when you set up the camera to make certain the coaches watching the video will be able to see the three point and key lines and the position of your feet relative to those lines. Place pylons or chairs or some other visible objects at the corners of the relevant shooting areas. See the sample videos for an example of the placement of the pylons.
