The unskilled demonstrator in the videos below simply attempts the shots from the required court shooting areas. Skilled players will be moving much faster, making their shots at far higher percentages, and completing the drills in much shorter times. Results will be ranked according to completion time. Coaches seeking players will consider combinations of completion time, size, experience, reputation and other factors.

There are two example videos below. The first shows the drill being done with text and commentary. To read the text in a video, just click on the pause button, then click on the play button to resume the video. The second video is only the video portion of the first video without text and without commentary. Watch one or both and read the rules below. The videos are examples of the demonstrator attempting to follow the rules. The rules govern the competition. The rules are below the videos

First version - video of drill with commentary and text:

Example videos: (Warning: In court area 15, after missing the first shot, then making the second shot, the shooter lost track of the court area and mistakenly took the next shot by passing the ball to himself in court area 10 and making the basket. Then the shooter switched back to court area 15 for the remaining shots. The result is the shooter made only four shots from court area 15 rather than the required 5, and made six shots from court area 10 rather than the required 5. Other than those errors, he did, eventually, make the required five shots in the required ways from each of the required areas. Due to the errors, the shooter's video would be disqualified from championship competition.) Also, the shooter's preference was to alternate entering the shooting area from the neighboring shooting areas. For example for his 5 baskets from shooting area 10 he made the first one after entering area 10 from area 5, the second after entering area 10 from area 15, the third after entering area 10 from area 5, the fourth after entering area 10 from area 15, and the fifth after entering area 10 from area 5. That caused him to cross the width of area 10 five times. It may be more efficient and result in shorter completion times to make your first two or three baskets from area 10 by entering area 10 from area 5, then make your final two or three baskets from area 10 by entering area 10 from area 15. Of course, in some situations it may depend where a rebound falls or is recovered.

Second version - video of drill without commentary:

This drill tests the ability to shoot from beyond the three point line.

You must make 35 baskets as specified below.

The drill begins when you enter the court from out of bounds beyond the baseline.

The drill ends when you have successfully made 35 baskets as specified below.

You must make five baskets from each of shot areas 1, 6, 11, 16, 15, 10, and 5.

Prior to attempting each basket, you and the ball must enter the shot area from a neighboring shot area outside the three point line. For example, prior to each shot from shot area 6, you must enter shot area 6 from either shot area 1 or shot area 11.

There are exceptional rules for shot areas 1 and 5 described below.

For each of the other shot (shot areas 6, 11, 16, 15, and 10) you must: Make one basket after passing the ball to yourself from one neighboring area into the shot area; make one basket after passing the ball to yourself from the other neighboring area into the shot area; make one basket after dribbling into the shot area from one neighboring area; and make one basket after dribbling into the shot area from the other neighboring area; and make your fifth basket after entering the shot area by repeating any of the four preceding methods. For example, for shot area 11, you must: Make one basket after passing the ball to yourself from neighboring area 6 into shot area 11; make one basket after passing the ball to yourself from neighboring area 16 into shot area 11; make one basket after dribbling from neighboring area 6 into shot area 11; make one basket after dribbling from neighboring area 16 into shot area 11; and make one basket by repeating any of the preceding four methods.

The intent for areas 6, 11, 16, 15, and 10 is to require shooters to demonstrate a variety of skills while scoring from each shot area. So they are to score:

  • once by cutting and catching and facing the basket to their left and shooting;
  • once by cutting and catching and facing the basket to their right and shooting;
  • once by dribbling with their right hand with the basket to their left and shooting;
  • once by dribbling with their left hand with the basket to their right and shooting;
  • via any of the preceding four methods for their fifth basket.

For shot areas 1 and 5, there are exceptional rules. Two of your baskets from shot area 1 and two of your baskets from shot area 5 must occur after entering the shot areas from out of bounds beyond the baseline and after passing the ball to yourself by releasing the ball with reverse spin while at least one of your feet is outside of the shot area and with the ball touching the floor once and only once within the shot area. Two of your baskets from shot area 1 must occur after dribbling the basketball from neighboring area 6 into shot area 1. Two of your baskets from shot area 5 must occur after dribbling the basketball from neighboring area 10 into shot area 5. Your fifth basket in each of shot areas 1 and 5 may occur in any of the ways described above.

Prior to each basket both feet and the ball must touch the floor last entirely within the shot area and without touching the three point line.

If you miss a shot or break the footwork or area rules, repeat the shot attempt.

Once you make one shot attempt from a particular shot area, you must continue to attempt shots from that shot area until you have made the five required baskets from that shot area. Only after making five baskets from a single shot area may you attempt a shot from another shot area.

Only you may touch the basketball during the drill.

You, the basket, and the basketball must stay inside the video's frame at all times. The video may not be edited. The camera must be positioned above court level sufficiently for viewers to see clearly the entire three point line in both the three point shooting and mid-range shooting drills. The camera must be positioned above court level sufficiently for viewers to see clearly the entire key in the inside shooting drill. Look through the viewer when you set up the camera to make certain the coaches watching the video will be able to see the three point and key lines and the position of your feet relative to those lines. Place pylons or chairs or some other visible objects at the corners of the relevant shooting areas. See the sample videos for an example of the placement of the pylons.
