Skillchamps' drill rules:

Three Point Shooting Rules

Summary: Going around the horn and back 3 times you make 42 baskets from 7 shooting areas in 3 point land. You make 14 catching and shooting, 14 dribbling, and 14 after a jab, cross-over, dribble drive move. Only you may touch the basketball during the drill. The shortest completion time earns the best ranking. Example videos and detailed rules are below.

Skillchamps Basketball Court

This drill tests the ability to shoot from beyond the three point line.

You must make 42 baskets as specified below.

You must make fourteen baskets after dribbling

Make one basket from each of areas L1 through L7, in ascending order, while dribbling the ball with only your left hand. Make one basket from each of areas L7 through L1, in descending order, while dribbling the ball with only your right hand.

Demonstration video for footwork rules for three point shots from the dribble:

Your entering the shooting area: You must enter the long shooting area from the long shooting area from which you made your most recent basket. For example, while moving from area 1 through area 7, to shoot from long 2 area, you must enter from the long 1 area. Each foot and the ball must touch the floor of the preceding long area at least once. For example, prior to shooting from long area 2, each foot and the ball must touch the floor at least once within long area 1 before entering long area 2. You must enter the long shooting area from which you made your most recent basket from its matching mid area. For example, prior to shooting from long area 2, you must enter long area 1 from mid area 1.

The ball entering the shooting area: The ball must be dribbled into the long shooting area.

Within the shooting area: Each foot and the ball must touch the floor once and only once within the long shooting area before shooting.

Exiting the shooting area: The last time each of your feet and the ball touch the floor prior to your shot, the touching must be outside the three point line.

You must make fourteen baskets after catching the basketball

Make one basket from each of areas L1 through L7, in ascending order. Make one basket from each of areas L7 through L1, in descending order.

Your entering the shooting area: You must enter the long shooting area from the long shooting area from which you made your most recent basket. For example, while moving from area 1 through area 7, to shoot from long 2 area, you must enter from the long 1 area. Each foot must touch the floor of the preceding long area at least once. You must enter the long shooting area from which you made your most recent basket from its matching mid area. For example, prior to shooting from long area 2, you must enter long area 1 from mid area 1.

The ball entering the shooting area: The ball must be passed with reverse spin into the long shooting area with both hands simultaneously. This is to distinguish the bounce pass from a dribble.

Within the shooting area: Each foot and the ball must touch the floor once and only once within the long shooting area before shooting.

Exiting the shooting area: The last time each of your feet and the ball touch the floor prior to your shot, the touching must be outside the three point line.

You must make fourteen baskets after jab stepping, crossing your jabbing foot to the other side of your body, and dribbling before shooting

Demonstration video for footwork rules for three point shots after jabbing, crossing over your foot, and dribbling:

Make one basket from each of areas L1 through L7, in ascending order, while jabbing with only your left foot. Make one basket from each of areas L7 through L1, in descending order, while jabbing with only your right foot.

Your entering the shooting area: You must enter the long shooting area from the long shooting area from which you made your most recent basket. For example, while moving from area 1 through area 7, to shoot from long 2 area, you must enter from the long 1 area. Each foot must touch the floor of the preceding long area at least once. For example, prior to shooting from long area 2, each foot must touch the floor at least once within long area 1 before entering long area 2. You must enter the long shooting area from which you made your most recent basket from its matching mid area. For example, prior to shooting from long area 2, you must enter long area 1 from mid area 1.

Starting the move: Without touching the three point line, both feet must touch the floor of the shooting area at the same time that both hands touch the ball.

Jabbing: Your jabbing foot must leave the floor, move forward and touch the floor again without crossing an imaginary line running directly from your body to the basket.

Crossing over and dribble driving: Your jabbing foot must leave the floor and cross an imaginary line running directly from your body to the basket and touch the floor again. While your jabbing foot is crossing an imaginary line you must dribble the ball with the hand on the opposite side of your body as your jabbing foot. For example, if your jabbing foot is your left foot, then you must dribble the ball with your right hand while your jabbing foot crosses from the left side of the imaginary line to the right side of the imaginary line. After you release the ball on your dribble, your non-jabbing foot may move forward and touch the floor in a position to facilitate your shot.

Exiting the shooting area: The last time each of your feet and the ball touch the floor prior to your shot, the touching must be outside the three point line.

The narrated video below explains the drill. Video of a shooter Bask000003 doing the complete drill is on the Champions page.

Additional Rules

Because on your first shot attempt there are no areas from which you will have made your most recent basket a special rule is required. You begin each trip through the seven court areas from the starting position. The starting position is simultaneously holding the ball with both hands and standing with both feet simultaneously touching the baseline and the long court area with the same number as that of the floor area from which you will be taking your first shot. For example, if your first shot attempt will be from either long area 1 or mid area 1, then both feet must simultaneously touch the baseline and long area 1 prior to starting the drill. The drill begins at the earliest of either hand leaving the ball or either foot leaving the baseline. From the starting position, if you are attempting a long area shot, then you move into the shooting long area and if you are attempting a mid area shot, then you move into the matching long area. Both move you into the same long court area 1 regardless of whether your shot attempt will be from long area 1 or mid area 1. For example, if the starting position requires your feet to touch the baseline and long area 1, then you would move into long area 1 regardless of whether your four shot attempt will be from long area 1 or mid area 1.

The drill ends when you have successfully made the number of baskets required by the drill.

If you miss a shot or break the footwork or area rules, repeat the shot attempt.

Once you attempt one shot attempt from a particular shot area, you must continue to attempt shots from that area until you have made all of the required baskets from that area. Only after making the required number of baskets from a single shot area may you attempt a shot from another shot area.

Only you may touch the basketball during the drill.

You, the basket, and the basketball must stay inside the video's frame at all times. The video may not be edited. The camera must be positioned above court level sufficiently for viewers to see clearly the entire three point line in both the three point shooting and mid-range shooting drills. The camera must be positioned above court level sufficiently for viewers to see clearly the entire key in the inside shooting drill. Look through the viewer when you set up the camera to make certain the coaches watching the video will be able to see the three point and key lines and the position of your feet relative to those lines. Place pylons or chairs or some other visible objects at the corners of the relevant shooting areas. See the sample videos for an example of the placement of the pylons.
